Rising within the expanding urban fabric of the Selçuklu district in Konya, the Development and Technology Center was designed as a multi-functional cultural and educational facility that connects a public investment to the everyday life of the district. Developed at the request of Selçuklu Municipality, the project is built on a program that moves education beyond the classroom into workshops, stages and laboratories; the result is a 3,551 m² building where young people engage with technology, craft and the arts.
The design concept began with the union of two contrasting geometries within a single volume. The sharp, dynamic form of the entrance hall was set in deliberate contrast with the wide, circular mass that houses the main event spaces; together with the facade design, this contrast strengthens the building's presence at an urban scale. While each function occupies its own distinct part of the building, a soft, continuous plan was adopted at the transitions between interior spaces. The entrance, conference hall, workshops and club floors are differentiated on plan through circular segments of varying radii, and where these segments meet, permeable in-between spaces emerge with softened boundaries.
The facade carries the project's clearest cultural reference. The perforated screens wrapping two floors, derived from Seljuk-era geometric motifs, are not a decorative addition; they form a functional layer that filters daylight according to the sun's angle while weaving the building's local identity into the city's silhouette. The changing light throughout the day produces a shifting pattern of shadow inside the building, turning the surface from a static shell into a living one that reads differently at different times. Combined with the night lighting, the same motifs give the building a landmark presence that stands apart from the surrounding residential fabric without becoming foreign to it.
Program and Public Reception
The center's internal organization was structured to support a learning model spread across twelve distinct fields: from geographic information systems and map literacy to cybersecurity, from unmanned aerial systems and mechatronics to fashion and jewelry design, from music and calligraphy to history and public speaking workshops. This diversity is reflected in the plan itself: each workshop is defined as an independent unit at its own scale, while the shared club areas and multi-purpose hall bring different age groups and disciplines together under one roof.
The center has been in active use since 2022 and has reached thousands of students to date; in the summer months the program also opens to adults, extending the building's use across the full calendar year. The official opening took place with the participation of a wide protocol group, including the Minister of National Education, and following completion the project received sustained coverage in the national and local press; this attention is a sign that the building has become not merely an educational facility, but a public reference point tied to the district's identity.
The Selçuklu Development and Technology Center stands as a design study in how scale and intimacy, monumentality and everyday use, can coexist within a single volume. Today that balance continues to be tested through the hundreds of young people and local users who use the building every day.
