Banja Luka Multifunctional Hall

The project has been designed as one of the key urban hubs reflecting the growing, dynamic, and modern character of Banja Luka. Considered as one of the initial steps in the vision to enhance the region’s urban identity, the project will play a significant role in defining the character of its location. Developed with an expressive formal approach symbolising a modern and progressive structure, the design integrates three primary functions within a single complex. The natural forms of the Vrbas River a landmark in the city’s collective memory along with its largest tributary, the Vrbanja River, served as formal references for the design.

Main Elements of the Architectural Concept

The dynamic lines of the building masses and façades reflect the urban rhythm that the complex will contribute to the city through cultural and artistic events. The project’s artistic character will generate a monumental presence at the urban scale, reinforcing the spatial relationship between the site and the city.

Visitor access is defined at three main points: the southern entrance facing Olimpijskih Pobjednika Street, the western entrance opening onto Mladen Stojanovic Park, and the eastern entrance providing direct access from the open car park. This layout ensures accessibility from various parts of the city. The staircases on the southern façade enhance the sculptural impact of the building, adding modern dynamism to the city skyline. The square, designed as an open-air stage, functions as a public performance and interaction space a vibrant urban node operating 24/7.

Relationship Between Function and Form
The core design approach aims to strengthen the visual perception of different functions while enabling simultaneous use. The floor levels are organised to provide visitors with direct access to all areas. The centrally located atrium serves as a focal point linking the functions together, creating an inviting and modernist atmosphere within the interior. This configuration optimises circulation and accessibility, while allowing visitors to experience the building and its ongoing artistic activities in a pleasant ambiance.

The continuity between interior and exterior spaces enables the design of enclosed, semi-open, and open areas as part of a coherent spatial whole. This approach not only creates a memorable visual identity but also allows the complex to evolve and diversify over time through its flexible, dynamic, and adaptable structure.
